> i'm having a day in today. was not feeling so good until the
> mailman came to the door and brought me a hydrophone and asked for
> a sticky plaster... then another mailman came to the door and
> brought me a macbook pro disguised as a cardboard box. the house
> now has this smell of polythene and brand new equipment...i keep
> running my finger along the silvery sleekness and asking myself 'am
> i dreaming?'. i click the heels of my red shoes together and say
> 'four gigabytes of ram, four gigabytes of ram, four gigabytes of
> ram,' open my eyes and i'm still in the same place.

Lemongrass Beef

This is another one of those comforter dishes, and was made in commiseration of the (anticipated) Scotland defeat by Ireland in the Six-nations Rugby tournament yesterday. Scotland have gloriously lost every single match so far, and are on their way to collecting 'The Wooden Spoon'. Perhaps they may redeem themselves in the Calcutta Cup, the Six-Nation match between Scotland and 'the auld enemy' England, in March.

Ingredients:
2 onions
5g whole allspice
1 cinnamon stick
5g fresh grated ginger
2 green peppers
750g stewing steak
2 tablespoons of fresh lemongrass
500ml stock
500g of cubed pumpkin/butternut squash
2 cloves garlic

Soften onions. Stir in allspice cinnamon and ginger. Add meat to pan and brown. Stir in lemongrass and stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 mins. Stir in pumpkin/butternut squash and peppers and simmer for 20-30 mins. Stir in garlic, switch of cooker and allow to cook in heat.

I served this with pitta bread and fresh yogurt. The photo looks nothing like it did in the book; it tasted great, but I ain't no Domestic Goddess!

Athenian Lamb Hotpot

This dish is comfort food in anticipation that Scotland will loose (again) against Ireland in the Six-Nations Rugby tournament this afternoon.

Ingredients:
1KG of Boneles lamb, cubed
olive oil
2 onions (finely chopped)
1 green pepper
250ml tomato paste
185ml chicken broth (stock)
a few ground cardamons
cinnamon stick
ground black pepper
fresh coriander

Cook meat till browned. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Cook onion and pepper until onion softens. Stir in tomato paste and broth. Add cardamon, cinnamon and bring to the boil. Return meat to pan with coriander. Cover and simmer. I cooked this for around an hour then switched the cooker off to allow it to cook in its own heat.

In the picture I served this with couscous, and probably added a little to much tomato, but it still tasted fine...the last of this dish is waiting until after 7pm. Good luck lads!!

The Sun, Moon and ELF (1-300Hz)

From Electromagnetic Man
pgs 40-41

Lieber (1979) published a collection of many studies purporting to show a reliable lunar influence on various areas of human behaviour, although Rotton and Kelly (1985), using meta-analysis, have fiercely contested this claim. However whereas studies of social behaviour can be easily criticized for neglecting a variety of contributing variables, biochemical studies, like those of Rounds (1975), who has found a lunar periodicity in the concentration of neurotransmitter-like substances from human blood, are more difficult to refute. Lieber suggested a theory of gravitational ‘biological’ tides as the possible mechanism of effect but the accumulated evidence indicates that an electromagnetic link is far more plausible.

The Moon is known to modulate the earth’s geomagnetic field during its monthly 29.5 – day phase (synodic) cycle (Bigg, 1963). Bell and Dufow (1966) showed that this influence tends to peak at the Full Moon; the closer the Full Moon is to the plane of the elliptic (the plane of the Earth’s orbit round the Sun; i.e. to there being a lunar eclipse), the greater the effect. The celestial latitude of the Moon varies up to 5 degrees north and south of the elliptic, in what is termed its 27.5 – day ‘nodal’ cycle, after the two points of intersection, or ‘nodes’. Bell and Defouw showed that when the Moon’s position in its nodal cycle is within 1 degree of the elliptic at the Full Moon (phase cycle), the effect on geomagnetic activity reaches its peak, and declines uniformly as it moves toward 5 degrees north or south of the elliptic. Thus, any claim on human behaviour or other phenomena, for example, post-operative haemorrhaging (Andrews, 1961), may well vary in its intensity according to the Full Moon’s celestial latitude in any given phase cycle. The conflicting results obtained in human lunar cycle investigations to date may be due to the neglect of the Full Moon’s celestial latitude (nodal cycle position) and the actual geomagnetic variation produced by the Full moon in each individual cycle phase under study….The findings of Bell and Dufouw suggest that one should compare the effects of Full Moons within 1 degree of the elliptic with those of Full Moons at more than 4 degrees from the elliptic. One likely biosensor for any such effects is the pineal gland, which has found to be extremely sensitive to changes in magnetic field and to ELF.

Aleksandr Chizhevsky

From Electromagnetic Man
Pg 39

One of the first researchers to study the effect of solar activity on mankind was a historian in Russia, Professor Aleksandr Chizhevsky (1897-1964), who is considered by many as the father of heliobiology. Chizhevsky’s main interest was sunspots, which he correlated with human activity. After collating data covering 2400 years, he claimed that it showed the world’s major mass movements, including all wars, uprisings and social movements, revealed regular cycles linked to the sunspot cycle (Chizhevsky, 1934, 1971). The peak in popular unrest coincided in nearly every case, at or near the year of maximum solar activity. He claimed that mass excitability linked to each solar cycle could be divided into four phases – minimum, increase, maximum and decline – which matched the progress of each solar cycle. According to Chizhevsky nearly 80 percent of all major events in modern history occurred in phases 2 and 3 and only 5 percent in phase 1. some examples of the former include the French revolutions of 1789, 1830 and 1848, the commune of 1870, the two Russian uprisings of 1905 and 1917, and the outbreak of the second world war (Playfair and Hill, 1978). More recent examples include the invasion of Czechoslovakia and the world-wide student unrest in 1968, the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the Falklands war in 1982.

As this book was published in 1989, there are no current references given for the correlation between sunspot activity and unrest. The last dates given in this book for solar maximum was the end of 1989 or early 1990.
