Dr Richard Barbrook after his speaking tour in Austria II

The same drama from slightly further away. Actually, Richard was quite brave and back to his chirpy old self soon after. The only thing which I still don't undrestand: when I last time said that I had 'slipped up in the bathroom' that was not really the full truth. So maybe there is a yet unknown background to this incicdent.

Dr Richard Barbrook after his speaking tour in Austria (close)

This is what Dr. Richard Barbrook looked like at the end of his speaking tour in Austria. After speaking in Vienna on Wednesday 25 he went to Graz where he gave his talk at the Elevate festival. And the Elevate festival is also quite a big music festival. So Dr. Richard indulged a bit, we can only assume. When I took him to his designer hotel at 3.30 am he seemed okay. Then the next day I got a call being told that the good Dr. was at the hospital and needed stitches to his forehead. Later he claimed to have slipped while taking a shower in the bathtub. It is widely known that in the industrialized world many people actually come to harm in the bathroom, but then usually they are over 80. But anway, we hope the hotel has got shower mats by now so that no further accidents happen.

Tafelspitz and Pumpkin

The meat on the left is Tafelspitz for which my dictionary only gives a translation of prime beef boiled. This you can find everywhere in eastern Austria. But the more important part is the pumpkin stew here as a side dish which makes a good main meal by itself. This style of Styrian Pumpkin I love and it was cooked for me by my mother on 45th birthday.
I didn't have the chance to ask her for a detailed recipe, so for the time being take this one
Styrian Pumpkin It is from the official Styrian government homepage, the design is a bit stern. But what their recipe does not tell you is that the pumpkin dish is best cooked not with butter but with pig fat. This makes the difference in taste but is not likely to be savvoured by everyone the same.

Wireless Community Weekend and 45RPM

Last weekend, Saturday 15th of September, a wireless community weekend was held in the rooms of the former MedienKunstlabor at Kunsthaus Graz. Wireless community networkers from Funkfeuer Wien, Graz and Bad Ischl met with guests from Berlin (B.A.T.M.A.N) and Italy/Netsukuku.

The Saturday was started with an informal exchange. Later the various approaches to mesh routing were presented, in particular OLSR-Next Generation and B.A.T.M.A.N. I was very pleased to learn that the developers of B.A.T.M.A.N have made good progress, because a year has passed since I last had a chance to get personally informed about the project by Elektra. At the end of a long afternoon Jaromil gave a short presentation of the anarchic DNS protocol Netsukuku, talking to the developer via sweb stream and irc. Then, after a short break, I gave my talk, an improvised German version of 45RPM. 45 Revolutions Per Minute This text is maybe the best update of my current research interests. The presentation was followed by a lively discussion.

At the same occasion my 45th birthday was celebrated in a circle of friends and comrades from the wireless scene and I could spin some of my old vinyls, yes, on 45 revolutions per minute, which was the idea that held everything together. The party crowd celebrated with further DJs Disko404 and Amok Tok Tok till late into the night.

The event was very well organised by Funkfeuer Graz
and has done an excellent job in documentation. Here you will find edited versions of the videos:
Vorträge/Lectures at Wireless Community Weekend

There is also an audio online archive of all the talks (in German)
