My children and I think that this plant may be some kind of triffid beanstalk that will reach to the sky, grown from a discarded mutant seed. if this is the case we may be able to reach the giants kingdom where we have heard that he keeps a turkey that lays giant golden eggs. Not wanting to wait until christmas, we decided to feed the plant as much light as possible to make it grow...
Maybe if you plant the photo in your garden you will get one to grow too, or maybe you could make one yourself then we could all go climbing, turkey hunting and of course egg stealing... this will not be a problem if the kingdom is as trusting as a bus of fresh-faced tourists but remember to bring a big bag anyway.

Inventing Methodologies is a series of conferences designed to provide a platform for the discussion of the novel and highly-contested notion of practice-based research in art practice.

Practice-based researchers are faced with a dual challenge. The first is the intrinsically bifurcated nature of a research project composed of a written element in conjunction with a practical element. The second is the interdisciplinarity inherent in writing art. These structural complexities are also an enduring characteristic of the practice/theory relationship.

What constitutes research in the context of practice-based PhD? What is the relationship between research and art practice? Is the written element also a practice requiring its own set of competencies? Indeed, how many practices are involved in practice-based research?

Can the tension between theory and practice provide one way to unravel methodological processes? Does the reflexive monitoring of empathic or ‘obsessive’ research strategies in fact generate the discourse and criticality of the project? Is it possible to outstrip the criteria of legitimation by setting tailor-made criteria for research objectives?

Inventing Methodologies provides the opportunity to unravel these processes and the incentive to articulate these personal avenues by encouraging discussions on the possibilities of practice-based research.

Dear All,

as a subscriber to The Next Layer website I would like to point your attention to the following topic and event:

On April 21st at Goldsmiths, Digital Studio, an experimental workshop will be held about practice-led PhDs. You find the full blurb below and on our homepage. This event is jointly organised by Adnan Hadzi of Deptford TV and me. We would like to invite you to join this discussion. Our blurb is very minimal and only scracthes the surface of many contentious issues related to practice led PhDs, research, new technologies and methodologies.

We have started this thread as a 'page' in Drupal lingo. A page is a static page with a fixed address and it offers most flexibility regarding things to be added. This means that this is also a good opportunity to test some of then many possibilities that have been added. Lets have a multi-threaded, multi-nodal, many-media to many-people discussion.

Taxi to Praxi (and back again)

This one day workshop "from taxi to praxi and back again" uncovers and
examines some of the challenges and opportunities faced when creative
artistic practice is undertaking research. Independent artists and
software developers have made more rapid advances than those working
within the more traditionally minded arts and humanities departments in
academia.

The challenge is now to find ways of re-embedding useful aspects of free
and open source methodologies in academic practice based arts and
technology research. How do we incorporate and negotiate research in
those areas of work which are strongly inter- and trans-disciplinary?
The aim of the workshop is to address and discuss some of the generic,
rather than discipline-specific, challenges of undertaking
practice-based research within academia.

The workshop will draw on open and collaborative (FLOSS) methodologies proposing and discussing a diverse range of taxonomies and practices
thus "from taxi to praxi and back again".

The event is part of the Disclosures project and the Spring Season 2008 of Node.London.

There is an increasing amount of students undertaking practice-based PhDs across disciplines and practices in the arts as well as technology. This one day experimental workshop affords the opportunity to uncover and examine some of the challenges and opportunities faced when creative artistic practice is undertaking research and doing so by using modern technologies. In the past 10 to 15 years whole artistic genres and fields of work have been reshaped by the emergence of new ways of working facilitated by the internet and free and open source technologies. While many of those technologies have been created by academic research institutes in the first place -- the WWW for instance was invented at CERN to allow researchers a better way of sharing documents -- it seems that in the meantime other sectors of society have embraced the collaborative and participative characteristics of these technologies more strongly than the academic sector. Independent artists and creative free software developers have made more rapid advances than the more traditionally minded arts and humanities departments in academia.
